An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Ireland raises funds to send tablets for online school to Pinoy kids. His gesture has gone viral, with many netizens saying that it is nice of him to do this, especially since he is so far away.
Aldrin Licayan works as nurse at the Letterkenny University Hospital in Donegal, Ireland. He agrees with the decision of the Department of Education (DepEd) to hold online classes instead of letting the kids to go school for face-to-face learning. However, he feels sad after learning that many students won’t be able to go to school because they lack gadgets to attend online classes.

Since Licayan also hosts a vlog, he learned more about the sentiments of parents and students alike. It was then that he decided to help out.
“Nung una hindi ko siya iniisip kasi may mga problema rin ako. Pero dumami sila nang dumami pati iyong mga nakakausap kong mga bata,” Licayan explained.
“Naapektuhan talaga ako sa mga stories nila. Nagbalik sa akin iyong memories ko nung bata ako. Wala kasi akong magulang, e. Lumaki ako sa lola and nagpaaral sa akin tita ko ‘tsaka lolo ko, and hindi naman lahat naibibigay sa akin kaya alam ko iyong feeling.”
So, he launched a GoFundMe campaign he called “Distance Learning Tablets for Filipino Youth”. His initial aim was to give just around 10 tablets to Pinoy students in need, but the response to the fundraising project was so overwhelming that they got twice the number for the first wave!
Thanks to the Php70,000 Licayan was able to raise from the Pinoy community in Ireland and strangers willing to help out, they managed to send tablets to as many as 20 kids in the Philippines.

“Nakapagbigay tayo sa Iligan, Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Quezon Province, at marami pang iba. Sa isang province minsan lima, minsan dalawa, minsan isa lang—so, halo-halo talaga,” he happily added.
With the success of the fundraising, Licayan decided to continue raising funds so more kids could receive a tablet. Several people have already volunteered to be part of his team.
“Ang priority ko ngayon is work, health and fundraising kasi sobrang sarap makatulong. Ang sarap pala nun na kahit nasa gitna tayo ng pandemic nakakatulong tayo, may kakayanan tayo tumulong,” Licayan added.
