NTC Loses Signal During Teleconference Hearing with Senate on DepEd Issues

In a technical glitch that perfectly sums up what students and teachers are expected to experience this upcoming school year, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) loses its signal during the teleconference hearing with the Senate on DepEd issues.

During the hearing, the Senate seeks for clarification and better action from the Department of Education (DepEd) to address these issues, particularly with regard to the internet connection problems and lack of gadgets that many teachers and students are bound to face.

With the internet connection in the country being so problematic, the senators want the DepEd to explain whether everyone is ready for educational activities this school year.

The DepEd assures through Undersecretary Tonisito Umali that all the teachers will complete training before the school year starts on August 24. He also explained that the enrollment forms come with a survey to help the DepEd map out and determine which methods of learning delivery will be most useful and effective for students in a particular area.

According to Umali, the teachers’ chalk allowance of Php3,500 will be converted to cellphone load so they can connect to the internet which will be the primary method of providing learning to the students.

Those students who don’t have access to the internet and have no gadgets will be provided with self-learning modules. However, such will be monitored by teachers. Those with internet, radios, or TVs will learn through these methods.

But Basic Education Committee Chairman Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian questions whether the students could really learn on their own through these different methods of delivery.

The senators were alarmed about the state of the country’s internet connection and what the learners and teachers will use this upcoming school year after an official from the NTC was not able to join the teleconference hearing due to internet signal issues!

They slammed the NTC, asking whether the government agency is still practicing state-of-the-art technology since they can’t even join the senate hearing regarding the exact issue!

Kapag may technical problems po ang NTC, parang nawawalan na po ako ng pag-asa sa online learning sa bansa po natin dahil NTC po ang regulator ng telcos!” a dismayed Gatchalian commented.

The senators clarified that they will still support the programs that the DepEd will be implementing this school year.
