Harmful Effects of Cellphone Usage In Classrooms

Though cellphones are helpful educational tools in the modern classroom, research also reveals that such devices are co-related to students receiving lower grades.

Scientists discovered that individuals retain information better when attention is allotted solely on one task. Similarly, when attention is divided between tasks (multi-tasking), fewer information is retained in the long-run. With that, additional research by Stanford University shows that an individual’s thinking ability is reduced with excessive use of smartphones.

Researchers have delved deeper on the effects of technology in a classroom setting:

In a study in Educational Psychology, two researchers divided 118 college students into two groups. Each received the same controlled variables: same course, material, instructor, and classroom, and time. The only difference between the groups is that one group was allowed to use technology and cellphones in the classroom whereas the other was not.

The results of the case study showed that the students using devices scored half a grade lower while those who were in the classroom with them also scored lower due to the fact that the gadgets surrounding them were distracting. One of the researchers of the study, Dr. Glass, states that “these findings should alert the many dedicated students and instructors that dividing attention is having an insidious effect that is impairing their exam performance and final grade.”

In lieu of the detrimental effects of gadget usage in the classroom, it is necessary for educators and parents alike to brief and explain to students on such matter and to regulate their usage in the classroom in order to keep them focused on their studies.

Furthermore, parents should also provide proper guidance to their children on how they use gadgets at home so that they can practice the safe and responsible use of gadgets particularly  cellphones which children nowadays use on a daily basis.
