Former Teacher Volunteers to Continue Teaching Even Behind Bars

A former teacher is being praised online after he continues to teach even if he’s behind bars. He might have done something wrong that put him there, but he is still a teacher by heart and is willing to help others with his noble profession.

Some months ago, an inspiring inmate dad went viral for teaching his 5-year-old daughter while he’s in jail. “Tom” uses his e-dalaw privilege at San Juan City Jail in San Juan City, Metro Manila, to squeeze in some time to teach his young daughter. He even prepares visual aids to help him do it.

The jail warden and officers are supportive of Tom’s online tutorial for his kid. But it turned out that he is not the only one getting support from the officers in doing online classes.

Teacher “Robert” is also from San Juan City Jail. The 46-year-old licensed professional teacher was given the chance to continue teaching and providing free online tutorials.

The teacher spearheaded the jail’s “Karunungan sa Kulungan Project” to help the inmates’ children with their studies. San Juan City Jail Warden Jose Marie Sabeniano readily supported the program and even made sure to provide school supplies for these children under Teacher Robert’s class.

Iyong sense of purpose nya, nakita nya sa loob ng kulungan. na kahit nakakulong, magagawa pa rin natin makabuluhan ang buhay habang may natutulungan,” the warden said.

The jail warden further explained that the online tutorial program headed by Teacher Robert does not only help the children but the inmates as well. Plus, this also helps change Teacher Robert’s life.

Mrs. Hergielyn M. Gaca of DepEd San Juan helps provide the lessons that Teacher Robert needs for his students. This ensures that he is guided by the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) under the curriculum of the Department of Education (DepEd).

With 20 years of teaching experience, Teacher Robert easily adapted to the distance learning system used by DepEd as he teaches through Zoom. Watch the story here:
