Considered to be this year’s strongest typhoon in the world, ‘Rolly’ caused massive devastation across various islands in Luzon, Philippines. A number of people lost their lives due to landslides, sudden lahar flows, and floods.

At Barangay Gogon in Virac, Catanduanes, a father and his daughter lost their lives after going back home to retrieve her modules. They managed to get the modules but drowned in the flood and were found close to the river, some 5 minutes away from their home, still clutching the said modules.

At the height of ‘Rolly’, Tatay Ramon Jacob brought his wife and three kids to the evacuation center for safety. But his eldest child, Mecaella Jacob, was worried about losing her modules. A candidate for cum laude, Mecaella is just months away from fulfilling her dreams of graduating from college.

So, the two trudged back to their home to retrieve the modules even as the waters continued to rise. Though the two were able to get the modules and Mecaella’s laptop, the flood waters became too much for them to handle.

By morning, the family learned about their fate after rescuers found their bodies by the river, near their home. She lost her life but it was even more heartbreaking to learn that Mecaella was still clutching her modules when her body was found.

Mecaella was set to graduate from college as cum laude while Tatay Ramon is the breadwinner. Nanay Liwayway is unsure how she will raise her remaining kids but feels happy, somehow, that Tatay Ramon and Mecaella were together.

Yung lang inaano niya, ‘yung laptop, mga gamit niya. Masaya na rin po ako kasi magkasama sila ng papa niya kahit kaming 3 andito pa,” Nanay Liwayway said.
