Gone are the days where you can only teach in a formal classroom set up with a bunch of chalks, a chalkboard, and a handful of lessons to deliver. Nowadays, teachers can also teach students from around the globe through the internet. Most of them teach the English language to foreign students where they can earn dollars in return.

Justine Oliveros, a 28-year old who formerly worked as a call center agent, left her job to pursue a job as an “ESL” or “English as a Second Language” teacher as she had the responsibility of financing her family.

She reveals that the salary of an ESL teacher is very promising as she is able to generate around 15,000-80,000 pesos every month depending on the amount of hours she spends a day on teaching students. Essentially, you reap more rewards if you work more hours. She states: “Basta masipag ka. Siyempre ikaw rin bahala sa kikitain mo, kung magpa-plot ka ng schedule mo”

According to Jobstreet’s statistics, 70 percent of our local home-based workers (estimated at 1.5 million) have chosen a career path as an ESL teacher. As of lately, there are around 20,000 open slots on Jobstreet. Filipinos are known as eligible candidates for such positions as we are familiar with the language and can easily incorporate slang words.

Besides Jobstreet, the Department of Education (DepEd) also has open slots for 3,600 teaching positions. They also plan to increase these slots to 10,000.
